It is normal for water to drain from the outdoor unit, especially during the winter months. This occurs due to condensation and melting ice from the outdoor coil.
There is no need for concern—this is a standard function of the system and will not cause any damage. The outdoor unit is weatherproof and designed to withstand exposure to rain and other water sources.
If desired, a drain line can be connected to the underside of the outdoor unit to direct runoff water to a different location. The necessary drain connection pieces are included with the A/C system inside the outdoor unit packaging. However, most installers discard these unless specifically requested by the customer.
If a drain connection is required, we can supply the necessary parts. The customer will need to arrange for an installer or service technician to fit it.
Both the indoor and outdoor unit runoff water can be safely drained into a garden, as it will not harm plants or grass. However, runoff water should not be consumed.
The indoor unit also has a drain pipe that typically runs outside where the piping exits. This drain is only active in cooling mode and is always installed during installation.
